Caring is sharing - also our time together - even when working remotely

Empowering Unity through Nudging: Figs offers the perfect nudge for remote workers to embrace novel behaviors and spend time together, not apart.

The problem

With the rise of remote work due to the COVID-19 pandemic, more people in European countries are working from home. While remote work has advantages, it has also led to problematic behaviours, including the reduction of human interactions to screens and screen-fatigue. This has resulted in social isolation and poor mental well-being, especially among young remote workers.

Future thinking and the current trends

  • According to the BBC, 50 of the UK’s biggest firms have no future plans to return all of their staff to the office full-time.

  • 85% of managers believe that having remote workers will become the new normal for many teams

The outcome

Journey map

We quickly learned that most remote workers, plagued by loneliness or without a community, spend their lunch breaks in front of screens, for example, watching Netflix.

Hypothesis

Habit change: The timeframe

  • WHO: investing $1 in workplace mental health interventions yields a $4 return in improved productivity. By 2020, this return increased to $5.

  • Culture/awareness raising initiatives like tailored web portals and personal sessions yield the highest ROI at 6:1, while reactive measures have a low ROI.

  • ESG factors matter to investors, and workplace mental health is crucial for businesses. Employers must align with ESG criteria, including employee well-being and diversity.
